MSU Named Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs

This August, Mountain State University received several awards noting the distinguished nature of the instituion.

G.I. Jobs magazine, the premier publication for military transitioners, has named Mountain State University a Military Friendly School for 2010. According to the magazine, "Military Friendly Schools are those that actively recruit military students and implement military-friendly policies for continuing education." 

Publisher Rick McCormack stated in a letter to MSU, “I am proud to notify you that, after years of research and after compiling survey results and other data, Mountain State University has been named by G.I. Jobs magazine as a Military Friendly School for 2010! This honor ranks you in the top 15 percent of all colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide.  You should take great pride in this honor."

According to Matthew Pavelek, senior editor of G.I. Jobs, “The list was compiled through exhaustive research starting last May during which G.I. Jobs polled more than 7,000 schools nationwide.”

Mountain State University has enrolled hundreds of service members and veterans. However, the University expects to see an increase in enrollment with the recent expansion of its benefits to military personnel and their families. At the beginning of the summer semester, the University lowered its tuition for active duty military, reservists and National Guard members to $250 per credit hour for many of its undergraduate programs. Spouses and dependents are also eligible for the offer.

MSU also is a partner school in the Yellow Ribbon Program. In addition to benefits under the GI Bill, the Yellow Ribbon Program helps veterans who qualify by providing matching federal dollars to cover the cost of a portion of their tuition.

Of the recognition for the school’s efforts, MSU President and CEO, Dr. Charles Polk states, “We are proud of our history of supporting military service members. Mountain State University makes its best effort to provide academic programs that are relevant and accessible for all of our military students.”

The University is a long standing partner of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges consortium, an outreach program for the Army National Guard. MSU has a longstanding partnership with the West Virginia National Guard.
